SUMMARY: The Managing Director acts as the chief administrative leader by providing direction to Studio Tenn, exercising responsible stewardship of all resources within the organization to ensure the optimum balance of sustainable operations, financial strength, and institutional integrity. This position plays an integral role in the development and execution of the organization’s strategic plan and is hands on in day-to-day administrative and managerial activities over areas including finance, HR, marketing, development, board relations, and facilities. The Managing director leads by example in creating a respectful and equitable organization through building positive relationships and demonstrating fair treatment and respect for others, embracing diversity, valuing differences and taking personal accountability for own actions. This role works in collaboration with the Board of Directors, Artistic Director and the company’s executive team to realize Studio Tenn’s mission to captivate and inspire with Broadway-quality musicals, plays, and concerts while educating the next generation to create and delight in the experience of live theater.
RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job, an individual must perform each essential function satisfactorily with or without reasonable accommodation. The Managing Director is responsible for the overall business, administrative, and operational management of the company.
Administrative and Operational Leadership and Management
• Partner with the Artistic Director and Board of Directors to set and execute theater’s strategic vision and long-term goals while providing leadership to a positive, inclusive culture.
• Oversee all aspects of Studio Tenn’s day-to-day operations to deliver a strong infrastructure.
• Manage, supervise, and coach department leaders in finance, marketing, development, public relations, producing, box office & communications, general administration and human resources.
Development and Fundraising
• Collaborate with the Board of Directors and the Development Team to identify and achieve annual contributed income goals.
• Oversee and support fundraising efforts, including cultivating donors, securing sponsorships, writing grants, and building relationships with foundations, corporations, and government agencies.
• Develop strategies to expand and diversify the funding base.
• Prepare and present timely reports on finances, operations, and strategic progress.
Financial Management
• Develop and oversee annual budgets, forecasts, and financial reporting.
• Manage cash flow, audits, and risk mitigation strategies.
Community Engagement and Development
• Acts entrepreneurially within the community to seek out and cultivate new donor relationships and partnerships.
• Cultivate relationships with donors, foundations, and corporate partners.
• Collaborate with the Artistic Director and Development Team on case-making and donor engagement.
Marketing and Communications
• Oversee marketing, communications, and public relations efforts to strengthen the theater’s brand and expand its audience.
• Support initiatives to enhance patron experience, community engagement, and education/outreach programs.
Production Management
• Lead all aspects of production to ensure top quality productions and maintain artistic intent of all productions.
• Monitor show budgets regularly to ensure financial health of show.
Facilities & Operations
• Manage theater facilities, rentals, and capital projects.
• Ensure safety, accessibility, and operational efficiency.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Theater, non-profit management or related field required. Minimum seven (7) years of relevant experience required.
• Proven experience in nonprofit management, arts administration, or related leadership roles.
• Strong financial acumen, including budgeting, reporting, and strategic financial planning.
• Demonstrated success in fundraising and donor cultivation.
