As the California Capital region’s premier orchestral and operatic group, the Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera (SP&O) specializes in performing large-scale symphonic and operatic works. We perform nine performances for over 15,000 attendees a year, provide a wide range of education and engagement activities for students and community members throughout the year, and partner with other civic organizations including the Sacramento Ballet and the City of Sacramento for performances such as the Nutcracker and Harry Potter.

We’re currently seeking a skilled and collaborative Director of Operations to join our team as we continue our mission to enrich lives and elevate cultural experiences through symphonic and opera music in the Greater Sacramento Region.

Reporting to the CEO, the Director of Operations will oversee the operations of our orchestra and opera productions, serving as a key partner to our musicians, artistic collaborators, stage crew, and guest artists. From season planning to concert execution, the position will ensure that SP&O productions are delivered at the highest level of excellence, while supporting the creative spirit of our organization.

COMPENSATION: $70,000 – $80,000 annually, depending on experience. This is a full-time exempt position and will require some work on evenings and weekends in conjunction with rehearsals and performances.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

General
Create and maintain master production schedule for each season.
Support season planning with the CEO, the Director of Finance, and Principal Conductor (PC), including production research and budgeting.
Manage artistic collaborations and contracting with the CEO.
Orchestra Operations
Oversee all rehearsal and performance logistics, including venues, equipment, staging, and transportation.
Be the on-site representative, assisting musicians, conductors, and guest artists during services.
Ensure that SP&O remains compliant with CBA and IMA whenever photography or videography occurs at rehearsals and/or concerts.
Supervise the Music Librarian in sourcing and preparing music.

Personnel Management
Prepare, distribute, and collect Letters of Intent (LOI), Personal Service Agreements (PSA), and all needed hiring paperwork, i.e. DE4, W4, and I9.
Manage musician hiring, contracts, and paperwork in line with the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and sub lists.
Supervise rehearsals and performances, ensuring prompt start times and compliance with CBA
Oversee payroll tracking, reimbursements, and related administrative tasks.
Serve as the primary contact, through text, email, and Rhapsody, for all orchestra musicians concerning the SPO.

IATSE
Serve as a primary contact for stage crew in collaboration with the Stage Manager.
Coordinate crew scheduling, paperwork, and budgets with the CEO and SM.
Support stage crew during load-ins, performances, and load-outs as needed.

Chorus
Oversee scheduling, contracts, and logistical needs in collaboration with the Chorus Manager and Chorus Master.
Ensure timely preparation and distribution of chorus music.
Assist with rehearsal setup and venue arrangements when needed.

Auditions
Following CBA guidelines, organize, manage, and oversee SPO auditions.
Secure venues, coordinate audition committees, and communicate with candidates.
Distribute relevant schedule and audition repertoire information.
With Operation Manager’s assistance, collect and organize all audition participants’ contact information.

Artist Services
Work with Guest Conductors on finalizing rehearsal schedules.
Send internally approved stage plots to Guest Conductors for approval.
Oversee the operations staff (Operations Manager, Orchestra Librarian) with the execution of riders and other artists’ expectations or requests.

Opera Production
In consultation with the CEO and Technical Director (TD), and in collaboration with OM, serve as point of contact with all necessary opera production staff.
Plan and administer production activities, including facility and equipment rental, staging requirements, and other logistical arrangements.
Coordinate effective communication among guest directors, designers, and all members of the production staff.
Help develop/oversee preparation of production materials for incoming Production staff and Cast.
Finalize production archive information, including archival recordings.
Work with TD to manage and administer staff/performer hours/crew calls during rehearsals.
Attend production meetings during the technical period and take notes.
Ensure production standards during the run of performances.
Create and ensure adherence to production deadlines for new productions.

Requirements
– 3-5 years of relevant experience in orchestra, opera, or production/event management.
– Familiarity with union environments (AFM, IATSE) preferred.
– Comfort with budgeting and expense tracking.
– Ability to occasionally work evenings and weekends.
– Valid California Driver’s License, and ability to transport self to and from the office, SP&O events, warehouse/storage unit space, etc.
– Ability to lift and carry 40–50 lbs, and stand for extended periods of time when working events.
– Must be able to do desk and computer work for extended periods of time.
