About the Role
The Grand Rapids Symphony seeks a full-time Director of Finance to join our team. Reporting to the Vice President of Finance and Administration, the Director of Finance serves as the second-in-command of the Finance Department, overseeing the organization’s accounting operations, financial reporting, and compliance processes. This position provides strategic support to the VP and leadership team, while ensuring accuracy and efficiency in day-to-day financial systems.
Key Responsibilities
• Oversees daily general ledger activity and ensures accurate recording of receivables; reviews reconciliations and provides analysis of variances and trends.
• Oversees payroll processing and year-end benefits reporting, ensuring compliance and accuracy; provides hands-on support as needed.
• Oversees musician instrument insurance program, liaising with the provider and ensuring timely updates and renewals.
• Directs and reviews the month-end close process; prepares or supervises journal entries and ensures timely, accurate financial statements.
• Ensures continuity of A/P operations through cross-training and provides oversight, stepping in as needed to maintain workflow.
• Reviews and reconciles internal cash flow projections; prepares weekly analysis to support VP and leadership decision-making.
• Oversees reconciliation of bank accounts and investment activities; ensures variances are analyzed and reported.
• Coordinates monthly reconciliations between QuickBooks and Raiser’s Edge; partners with Donor Relations leadership to ensure accuracy and resolve discrepancies.
• Oversees reconciliation of ticket sales across the accounting system, ticketing spreadsheets, and Ticketmaster data; collaborates with Box Office leadership to resolve timing or customer payment issues.
• Monitors affiliate deposits and check requests; reviews reconciliations and ensures compliance with agreements.
• Oversees grant accounting processes, ensuring restricted funds are recorded, tracked, and disbursed in compliance with agreements; prepares reports for grantors as needed.
• Serves as primary support to the VP of Finance and Administration, including analysis of GL accounts, preparation of financial reports for board/committee meetings, and active participation in annual audit and compliance reviews.
• Attends concerts and performances as required, in rotation and alignment with all GRS staff.
• All other duties as assigned.
Skills and Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or other related field required; advanced credential (Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant) strongly preferred- minimum of 4 years professional experience in nonprofit or complex financial environments, with progressive responsibility.
• Strong working knowledge of QuickBooks Online required; experience with payroll systems (TruPay preferred) and fundraising/ticketing systems (Raiser’s Edge, Ticketmaster) highly desirable.
• Proven ability to work collaboratively while providing mentorship, support, and direction within a team.
• Strong administrative abilities:
