The Graphic Design Assistant Mentor supports full time mentors and provides technical assistance, skill development in commercial arts, and growth opportunities for the young people in Artists for Humanity’s (AFH) safe but challenging environment. The Graphic Design Assistant Mentor also supports onboarding and design training for new teens, represents AFH to the community, stays current about youth issues, and is able to contribute design industry knowledge to projects and teens.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Provides technical assistance and design supervision to 10 teens
• Facilitates collaboration and presentation on group projects
• Maintains digital archive, organizes teen work, and assembles presentations
• Identifies and supports individual teen participant needs (i.e., absences, tardiness, job performance, report cards, strengths and weaknesses, interpersonal conflict, stress) with support/training from Design Mentor and Studio Director
• Develops positive group climate that encourages regular participant attendance and participant enthusiasm
• Chaperones teens to offsite field trips and on-site professional development opportunities
• Stocks materials, maintains and organizes studio
KEY QUALIFICATIONS
• Prior work experience in service industry and 1-2 years creative experience
• Background in the arts with broad exposure to graphic design
• A keen interest in young people, the arts, and the mission of AFH
• Proven experience working with adolescents; understanding adolescent concerns
• Demonstrated ability to serve as positive role model and mentor
• Highly effective interpersonal skills with an ability to communicate clearly and effectively
• Demonstrated organization, prioritization, and follow-up skills
• Proven attention to detail; time management; curricula/project planning skills
• Creative, adaptable and flexible problem-solving skill
Of Added Value…
Experience with professional photography and/or film making and videography; hands-on experience in using editing programs, industry standard equipment, and practices (Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, familiarity with pre-production, production and post-production of film making)
