The Opportunity:
The Auburn Symphony seeks an enthusiastic individual for a new position on its leadership team. Founded 38 years ago, we are Placer County’s premier community orchestra and boast approximately 70 of the most accomplished musicians in Northern California. We are a financially sound and growing organization that is passionate about our mission “to enrich and engage our community, across all generations, through the gift of music.”
Position Summary:
Working closely with the Music Director and Executive Director, the Operations Manager is responsible for the successful execution of Auburn Symphony productions, with primary oversight of back of house and stage operations for all performances, rehearsals, and auditions.
Responsibilities:
Concert and Event Production
• Plan and lead all production aspects of symphony concerts, rehearsals, and performance events with symphony staff, volunteers, and venue staff, including:
o Eight traditional performances at Placer High School Theatre
o All run-outs, including outdoor Symphony and Art in the Park and the Finale Concert at the Mondavi Center
o Young Artist Competition and Young Artist Recital
o Annual Auditions
• Communicate schedules and concert details on a timely basis to all parties involved.
• Negotiate/execute rehearsal and concert venue contracts.
• Determine concert stage plots and event run sheets in conjunction with Music Director, Stage Manager, and venue staff; trouble shoot production issues.
• Manage the storage, maintenance, rental, transport, set-up, placement and striking of production equipment. Oversee load in and out.
• Collaborate with Orchestra Personnel Manager, Librarian, and Business Manager to secure required musicians, music, licenses, and permits.
• Support Executive Director and Staff, as needed, for success of the organization.
Staff/Personnel/Production Team Member Supervision
• Manage and help to build-out the production team that includes Stage Manager, Production Assistant, Personnel Manager and Librarian; team responsible for activities such as set-up/tear-down rehearsals and concerts, hospitality for musicians and guest artists, and distribution of musicians’ parts via musician portal.
Finance
• Manage concert-related expenditures according to budget and approval procedures, reviewing monthly with Executive Director.
• Work with Business Manager to process artistic and production accounts payable.
• Assist the Executive Director, as needed, with the preparation of the annual operational budget.
Artistic Administration
• Collaborate with the Executive Director and Music Director to develop and maintain the annual master plan and calendar for symphony operations, particularly as it relates to rehearsals, concerts, performance venues, and other performing events.
• Prepare, negotiate, and comply with contracts for guest artists; execute arrangements with independent musicians.
• Coordinate guest artist travel, accommodation, transportation and general hospitality, as needed.
Professional Development
• The Symphony values professional development and best practices and encourages online or in-person seminars, conventions, or events; staff development is in the annual budget.
Qualifications:
• Highly self-motivated with superb organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to plan, prioritize, and handle multiple deadlines.
• Impeccable professionalism, excellent interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills with colleagues, musicians, vendors, and volunteers.
• Strong aptitude for problem-solving in a fast-paced environment; calm and flexible.
• Minimum of 2 years live event experience; symphony orchestra/performing arts experience preferred.
• Bachelors Degree or comparable experience.
• Ability to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends as required by performance/event schedule.
• Physically able to meet demands of the job, including: lifting up to 50 pounds, stand, walk, carry and reach, operate a motor vehicle and work both indoors and outdoors. Must have current driver’s license.
Job Details:
• Reports to: Music Director and Executive Director
• Supervises: Production Team: Stage Manager, Production Assistant, Personnel Manager & Librarian
• Status: .75 FTE. During production: hours as needed; outside of production: flexible schedule. Potential growth to fulltime
• Salary: $29 – $35 hourly, commensurate with experience
• Benefits: Paid Vacation and Sick Leave
• Location: Hybrid position; Office in Auburn, CA
