Celebrating, Performing, and Supporting Music Composed by Women

Boulanger Initiative (BI) is a not-for-profit organization launched in Takoma Park, Maryland in 2018 by co-founders Dr. Laura Colgate and Dr. Joy-Leilani Garbutt to champion music created by gender-marginalized composers. This includes the music of previous generations, works by living composers, and support for the creation of new music.

Boulanger Initiative advocates for women and all gender-marginalized composers. We foster inclusivity and representation to expand and enrich the collective understanding of what music is, has been, and can be. We promote music composed by women through performance, education, research, consulting, and commissions.

Today, Boulanger Initiative has twelve team members, seven board members, and an annual budget of $420,000 which supports pivotal programs that advocate for women and gender-marginalized composers. Our rapid growth is a reflection of the dedication of our founders, staff, committees, Board of Directors, and the timeliness of our mission. As our audience and supporter base has grown, so too has our ability to create meaningful and long-lasting change in the music industry. Visit www.boulangerinitiative.org to learn more.

The Web/Database Developer furthers the mission of the Boulanger Initiative by overseeing the development and maintenance of Boulanger Initiative’s Women & Gender Marginalized Composer Database (BID). A bulk of this responsibility includes collaborating with BI Education & Research staff to work toward future phases of BID – managing the main Airtable base and backend, developing and deploying new features of the public-facing BID web application, and maintaining its infrastructure and associated accounts. Additionally, the Web/Database Developer provides issue monitoring, support for analytics, and documentation as needed to other BI teams to facilitate their projects and duties.
