Salary Range: $50,000-$60,000 commensurate with experience, plus benefits (paid vacation, sick days, health insurance, retirement plan with company match)

The mission of the New Orleans Opera Association (NOOA) is to enrich the lives of all people by producing opera of the highest artistic quality and provide educational opportunities through traditional and innovative approaches. The Technical Director plays a critical role in the realization of the company’s goals and the overall growth of the New Orleans Opera.

New Orleans Opera Association is celebrating its 80th season in 2022-2023 and is proud to continue the legacy of producing opera in America’s First City of Opera, a tradition which began when Andre Getry’s Sylvain premiered in New Orleans on April 22, 1796. Each year, NOOA presents operatic productions that feature both classical and contemporary works. Beyond the stage, the key component of NOOA’s mission is its commitment to outreach and education programs in the Greater New Orleans area.

This position reports directly to the General and Artistic Director, and supervises a team of four at the H. Lloyd Hawkins Scenic Studio. The Technical Director will contribute to and help to execute the full life cycle of scenic production, including design, fabrication, installation, strike and logistics. In addition, the Technical Director oversees the New Orleans Opera set rental program, and provides vendor services to local schools, arts organizations, and corporate clients. Design opportunities for the New Orleans Opera are available to the right candidate, if desired.

Core duties include:
• Create construction drafting for projects to be built in the Studio
• Manage and develop shop build schedules
• Assist in building budgets and estimates by projecting materials and build needs for projects
• Procure materials for builds in accordance with project budgets
• Supervise scene shop builds, and assist with fabrication, installation and strike as assigned
• Supervise the scheduling and load-in/out for all scenery at the Studio
• Assist with shop organization and maintenance as needed
• Develop and enforce of safety policies and systems
• Maintain proper expense reporting as directed.
• Assist in budget management by tracking project hours to avoid overages.
This position is a good fit for someone who:
• Has deep experience in technical theatre or similar trades (event production, film and television, expo etc)
• Has extremely strong CAD skills (AutoCAD, VCarve, or Vectorworks)
• Has construction and/or fabrication experience
• Has strong leadership skills – confident in supervising a union crew, both in the build in the Scenic Shop as well as onstage.
• Is able to budget set builds for designers, creatively adjust designs as necessary, and complete set builds within the allotted budget.
• Is able to stand for long periods, carry at least 50 pounds, and participate in strenuous activities on a regular basis
