JOB SUMMARY: The Development Director is responsible for the development, management, implementation, and evaluation of Philadelphia Youth Orchestra’s (PYO) fundraising and development programs consistent with the organization’s needs and goals and with the highest standards of professionalism and ethical conduct.



-Plans, manages, and implements the annual campaign; oversees the solicitation and acknowledgment process, maintenance of records, and establishment and disclosure within IRS guidelines of donor benefits; monitors progress and adjusts as needed
-Works with President to develop and direct year-round program to cultivate new prospects and seek new funding opportunities
-Identifies corporations, foundations, and government agencies that provide arts and educational funding; prepares all solicitation materials including letters of inquiry, grant applications, budgets, and supporting materials; coordinates follow up on submissions
-Prepares interim and final progress reports to institutional funders, including assisting in management of evaluations for PYO’s Tune Up Philly program
-Manages, implements, and budgets for all fundraising special events including Annual Gala; evaluates and reports on results
-Coordinates relationships with volunteers for assistance at fundraising events, managing personnel tables at all concerts, and other areas as needed
-Oversees the development and production of all materials and language used to support PYO’s fundraising events and campaigns, including concert programs and annual brochures
-Provides the support to Board members and the President in donor cultivation.
-Manages annual ad sales campaign by cultivating relationships with local business, universities, and music schools

Budgeting and Planning

-Assists the President and Board in establishing annual contributed revenue goals
-Develops a fiscal year plan, calendar, communications timeline, and development budget in line with PYO’s master calendar and budget that incorporates all fundraising events and campaigns

Board of Trustees

-Staffs the Development Committee of the Board
-Identifies and researches prospective candidates for the Board
-Provides monthly development reports based on yearly plan for every Board meeting and Executive Committee meeting
-Recommends fundraising best practices and procedures to the President and Board


-Oversees the development office and maintenance of donor files and records; develop and administer donor benefits programs in accordance with IRS guidelines, and all other administrative matters pertaining to the development office
-Serves as member of the senior management team to assist the President in setting and implementing policies established by the Board
-Hires, trains, manages, and evaluates the performance of all development support staff, including interns and volunteers


-Collaborates with PYO’s Marketing and Public Relations Consultants to maximize fundraising opportunities that emerge from publicity and communication activities
-Works closely with the General Manager and all program division directors
-Maintains ongoing contact with contributors, corporate sponsors, and business and community leaders
-Supports Board and staff efforts to solicit in-kind contributions
-Actively pursues professional development opportunities in fundraising best practices and cultivates ongoing relationships with the local funding community
-Represents PYO at civic and cultural events in the community and attending and speaking at public events as requested
-Some evening and weekend work required
-Performs other duties as assigned by the President.

Desired Qualifications

-Bachelor’s degree required, master degree preferred
-3-5 years of experience in fundraising development
-Strong writing skills
-Ability to regularly multi-task and prioritize multiple projects
-Background or interest in classical music and/or education desirable but not required
-Strong work ethic, professional manner, high standards, and the ability to work independently as well as in a team environment essential
-Ability to work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends
