Potter Violins, a violin shop dedicated to providing exceptional instruments, accessories, and services to musicians of all levels, is seeking a talented and passionate individual to join our team in Takoma Park, Maryland as the Sales Manager. POSITION OVERVIEW
The Sales Manager is responsible for leading the sales team, driving revenue growth for the sales department, and ensuring an exceptional customer experience. This role requires both strategic leadership and hands-on engagement with customers, teachers, and the broader music community. The ideal candidate combines strong management skills with a passion for helping musicians find instruments that meet their needs and inspire their artistry.
Salary Range: $65,000 – $85,000, commensurate on experience.
Potter Violins is open Tuesday through Saturday.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Sales Leadership & Strategy
Develop and implement sales strategies to achieve monthly and annual revenue targets.
Lead and motivate the sales team through training, coaching, and regular performance evaluations.
Oversee customer engagement standards, ensuring a welcoming, knowledgeable, and supportive environment.
Supervise and support sales associates, ensuring consistent service standards and product knowledge across the team
Client & Community Engagement
Work directly with clients to understand their playing level, goals, and preferences in order to recommend and sell instruments and bows.
Provide personalized, consultative service to students, professionals, and parents throughout the instrument selection process.
Maintain and follow up on sales leads to ensure strong client relationships and maximize conversion opportunities.
Build and maintain relationships with music teachers, schools, and community organizations to support ongoing sales and outreach.
Represent Potter Violins at events, festivals, and conferences as a knowledgeable and approachable brand ambassador.
Operational Oversight
Coordinate with the workshop, rentals, operations, and senior leadership to ensure seamless client experiences from setup to sale.
Monitor and manage sales operations, including scheduling, inventory coordination, and CRM systems.
Ensure sales policies are effectively implemented.
Reporting & Analytics
Track and manage the sales pipeline, including lead generation, follow-ups, and customer retention metrics.
Analyze customer trends and provide recommendations for new products, services, and programs.
Track sales metrics and generate regular performance reports for leadership.
Collaborate with marketing to align promotions, advertising, and customer communications.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in Business, Music, Arts Administration, or related field (or equivalent experience).
Minimum 3–5 years of retail sales management experience, preferably in a music or specialty retail environment.
Knowledge of string instruments and the music education community required.
Professional-level performing experience on a string instrument strongly preferred.
Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to balance strategic planning and day-to-day management.
Proficiency in CRM, POS, and sales tracking systems.
Must be available for Saturday hours as part of the regular business schedule.
