The San Diego Symphony is currently searching for a Staff Accountant to join our small Finance team. The Staff Accountant is responsible for monitoring general accounting practices, following internal accounting controls and supporting the financial team. Other responsibilities of the Staff Accountant include general ledger and sub accounts analysis, journal entries for monthly closing, as well as variance analysis and other special projects as assigned.

Key responsibilities:

  • Prepare journal entries and provide proper supporting documentation
  • Help ensure month‐end and year‐end closing by designated deadline
  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts, as assigned by Controller, to ensure proper account balances
  • Investigate and resolve any discrepancies in a timely manner
  • Process and reconcile AP account; accurately review, code, and process vendor invoices; address and respond to vendor inquiries
  • Analyze department expenses by analyzing invoice/expense reports
  • Provide excellent customer service to all SDSO employees
  • Prepare weekly and monthly cash requirements reports and reconciliations
  • Prepare and process electronic transfers and payments, and weekly check run
  • Pay vendors by monitoring discount opportunities; verifying federal id numbers; scheduling and preparing checks; resolving purchase orders, contracts, invoices or payment discrepancies and documentation; insuring credit is received for outstanding memos; issuing stop‐payments or purchase order amendments
  • Assist in budgeting process
  • Book all cash receipts outside of the revenue reporting, assist with accounts receivable processing
  • Continually look for ways to improve processes and makes recommendations to management
  • Assist with the annual year‐end audit process, including preparing audit schedules
  • Prepare all IRS Form 1099 for all appropriate vendors and all IRS Form 592B for all appropriate artists at year end and make all required IRS payments are timely

Education and experience required:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, and preferably in accounting
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new software systems
  • Intermediate Excel level required; advanced proficiency in MS Excel preferred
  • Must be highly organized with exceptional attention to detail and accuracy
  • Must be familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the accounting field
  • Exceptional ability to work collaboratively and provide exceptional customer service internally and externally
  • Ability to work independently, exercise good judgment and critically analyze reports for accuracy
  • Ability to see both big picture and details
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast‐paced environment with a proven ability to meet and complete multiple deadlines and tasks

Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as deadlines demand
