Position Summary:

The Assistant Librarian is part of the team responsible for the music preparation for all departments at and events presented by The Metropolitan Opera. The Assistant Librarian maintains the circulating and resource collections of The Metropolitan Opera Music Library.

Primary Responsibilities:

§  Prepare performance material for all orchestral services, including proofreading, scanning, printing, binding, marking cuts, editing, bowings, and preparing transpositions, along with preparation of digital materials

§  Set out, collect, and track music before and after rehearsals and performances, including pit and all band music

Performance and stage band duty
Prepare and distribute materials as needed for the chorus, stage management & direction, surtitles, music staff, media, and artists
§  Maintain and assist in distributing materials from circulating collections

§  Answer inquiries about all aspects of repertoire being performed

§  Assist in care and maintenance the library, including machinery and supplies

§  Assist to maintain databases containing all pertinent information concerning operas, orchestral extractions, orchestral concerts, circulation database, and remote storage

§  Create performance and vocal material for transpositions/inserts and Metropolitan Opera commissions such as the creation of translated/transliterated vocal scores, abridged versions of operas, pastiche productions, and any other performance material that is published in-house

Qualifications & Skill Requirements:

§ Previous & significant experience as a music librarian in a large performing arts institution; opera experience preferred

§ Degree in Music (performance, history/musicology, education, theory)

§ Strong score-reading with familiarity working with unusual transpositions

§ Proficiency in digital music editing software (Photoshop, GIMP) and engraving software, with ability to adapt to The MET’s preferred platforms

§ Ability to work as part of a team and independently

§ Excellent customer service skills


Physical Demands:


The Metropolitan Opera is a performance venue that requires employees working in the building to be fully vaccinated. Due to the nature of this role, you must be fully vaccinated at the time your employment is scheduled to start.
·         Frequently required to use repetitive hand motion and to stand, walk, reach, bend.

·         Frequently required to lift up to 20 pounds.

·         Required to work evenings and weekend services.
